Dwarf Crested Iris
Dwarf Crested Iris
Iris cristata
A petite, low-growing perennial native to the woodlands of the South and Midwest. Growing just 3-6 inches tall, it features delicate blue-violet to pale lavender flowers with golden crested ridges on nearly stemless blooms. Narrow, sword-shaped green leaves form a lush groundcover, spreading quickly under optimal conditions.
Ideal for shaded woodland gardens, rocky slopes, or naturalized areas, it thrives in partial shade and medium-moist, well-drained soil, though it tolerates drier conditions. In spring, a drift of blooms adds a stunning splash of color and attracts bees and hummingbirds. To maintain vigor, divide clumps every few years in the fall.
Note: this is not native in Wisconsin but is native in Illinois and further South.
