The American Cranberry Bush, also called Highbush Cranberry, is a hardy native shrub that brings year-round color and supports wildlife. In spring, it blooms with white, lace-cap-like flowers, and by summer, its dense foliage provides shelter for animals. In fall, the leaves turn yellow, orange, and red-purple, while clusters of bright red berries, lasting through winter, offer food for birds like Cedar Waxwings and ruffed grouse.

Though unrelated to commercial cranberries, the American Cranberry’s tart berries are edible and work well in preserves. The bush grows well in moist, well-drained soils, tolerating full sun to part shade, and is adaptable to various conditions. It makes an excellent hedge or screen when planted four feet apart, with best fruit production from two or three shrubs. As a host for the Hummingbird Clearwing moth, this shrub adds both beauty and ecological value.
