Species details:
American Plum is a large, spreading shrub or small tree with an irregular form and branches that may develop thorn-like tips. Clusters of fragrant white flowers bloom in early spring before the leaves emerge, followed by small, round plums that ripen from yellow to red in late summer. Its green leaves turn shades of yellow and red in fall. American Plum can spread by root suckers, making it a good choice for naturalized areas, woodland edges, and wildlife hedgerows.

American Plum provides food and habitat for a variety of wildlife. Its early spring flowers offer nectar and pollen for native bees and other pollinators. The fruits are eaten by birds, deer, foxes, raccoons, and other mammals. It also serves as a host plant for the caterpillars of several butterflies and moths, including eastern tiger swallowtails. Its dense, sometimes thorny growth provides valuable nesting habitat and protective cover for birds.
