Amethyst Shooting Star
Amethyst Shooting Star
Dodecatheon amethystinum
Amethyst Shooting Star displays clusters of nodding pink to purple flowers with five fused petals forming a tube accented in maroon, yellow, and white. Blooming in early spring, this plant grows 4-18 inches tall and is suited to medium soils with exposure from nearly full shade to full sun. After flowering, it goes dormant for the summer.
Native to the Driftless region’s limestone bluffs and a small part of the Appalachians, Amethyst Shooting Star is rare in the wild, with fragmented populations at risk. Though delicate, it can adapt well to garden settings, bringing unique beauty to shaded or sunny spots.
Note: these are first year plants and they grow very slowly. Amethyst Shooting Star is a spring ephemeral and will go dormant over the summer.
