Bird's Foot Violet

Viola pedata

This early spring bloomer has a unique leaf shape and violet-blue flowers. It requires well-drained soil and will not tollerate crowding, so don't plant near tall or agressive species. Host plant for several species of Fritillary butterfly caterpillars.

Pairs well with Prairie Smoke and Common Blue-eyed Grass which have similar soil moisture requirments.
