Species details:
Black Chokeberry is a tough, attractive native shrub with flowers, fruit, and fall color all packed into one plant. In spring, clusters of white blossoms bring in bees and butterflies. By late summer, deep purple-black berries appear—tart but edible for people and a favorite for songbirds. The berries can be used for jams, jellies, or juices if you like a bold, tangy flavor.
In fall, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange, making this plant just as striking as it is functional. Black Chokeberry grows well in sunny or partly shaded spots and tolerates a wide range of soils, from dry to moist. It also provides excellent wildlife habitat and nesting cover.
