Species details:
Blackhaw Viburnum is a large, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with an upright, rounded form. Clusters of small, fragrant white flowers bloom in spring, followed by berries that transition from pink to blue-black as they ripen. Its dark green leaves turn shades of red and purple in fall, adding seasonal interest to the garden.
Blackhaw Viburnum is a valuable source of food and shelter for wildlife. Its spring flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees, flies, beetles, and butterflies. It serves as a host plant for spring azure butterfly caterpillars, while its berries are eaten by songbirds and small mammals, including squirrels and chipmunks. Its branching structure also provides shelter and nesting habitat for birds.
