Species details:
American Hazelnut is a multi-stemmed shrub with a rounded, spreading form and large, rounded leaves with toothed edges. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it produces dangling yellow male catkins and small, reddish female flowers. Edible nuts develop in late summer, surrounded by leafy husks. Its leaves turn shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. American Hazelnut works well along woodland edges, in naturalized plantings, and as a wildlife-friendly hedge.
American Hazelnut is especially valuable for wildlife because of its nutritious nuts, which provide food for squirrels, chipmunks, wild turkeys, woodpeckers, and other birds and mammals. Its early spring catkins provide pollen for native bees, while its leaves support the caterpillars of numerous moth species. Its dense branching offers nesting sites and cover for birds and small mammals.
