Indian Tobacco
Indian Tobacco
Lobelia inflata
Despite its name, it is not a true tobacco and should not be smoked or chewed, as it contains toxic alkaloids. Growing in open, often disturbed areas with moist to dry soil, this plant features pale white to light purple flowers with yellowish bases. Its hairy stems and serrated, elliptical leaves add to its distinctive appearance. The small, tubular flowers attract native bees, but due to its toxicity, deer and rabbits avoid it. Indian Tobacco is an annual but readily reseeds, making it a temporary filler in new plantings until longer-lived perennials establish.
