Species details:
Nannyberry is a hardy native shrub or small tree reaching up to 20 feet, perfect for hedges or naturalized plantings. In early spring, clusters of white flowers attract pollinators and host Spring Azure butterfly larvae. By fall, its leaves turn maroon-red, and dark blue berries provide food for birds and wildlife—also edible for jams. Thriving in both sun and shade, Nannyberry adapts to various soil types and tolerates drier sites, though it prefers moist areas. For optimal fruiting, plant two to three shrubs, and prune suckers to maintain a tree-like form if desired.
