Obedient Plant
Obedient Plant
Physostegia virginiana
Obedient Plant is a striking native perennial valued for its upright flower spikes and dependable summer performance. Blooming from mid- to late summer, it features dense rows of snapdragon-like flowers in soft shades of pink, lavender, or white that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
This adaptable plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist soils, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, and low-lying areas of the landscape. Once established, it is hardy, resilient, and tolerant of a range of growing conditions.
The common name “obedient plant” comes from its unique flowers, which can be gently bent to stay temporarily in place. It spreads rhizomes and can form attractive colonies over time, making it well-suited for naturalized plantings, borders, and meadow-style gardens.
