A short plant that does well in dry, rocky, well-drained soil. Does not do well in rich, moist soil. If it likes the conditions, it will spread and form an attractive groundcover. The leaves have a fuzzy, gray green appearance. The fuzzy, flower head resembles a cat’s paw.
Host plant for the American Painted Lade butterfly. The caterpillar pulls the leaves together with sticky threads to make a hidden "sleeping bag" or nest. The caterpillar hides and turns into a chrysalis inside this nest so if you see leaves like this, don't remove them!
