Prairie Ninebark
Prairie Ninebark
Physocarpus opulifolius
Prairie Ninebark is a versatile native shrub that offers year-round interest. In spring, pink buds open to white, spirea-like flower clusters, which later develop into reddish-pink seed capsules before turning brown and persisting into winter. Its distinctive peeling bark, revealing layers of reddish to light brown, gives it its name. Growing 8-10 feet tall and wide, it can be pruned in winter for a more compact form. This shrub provides excellent cover for birds, serves as a valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies, and hosts numerous moth species. It also works well as a hedge, helps control erosion, and enhances biodiversity in the landscape.
