Species details:
Pussy Willow is a large shrub or small tree with an upright, spreading form and slender branches. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it produces soft, silvery catkins that later turn yellow as they release pollen. Its long, oval leaves are dark green above and covered with a soft, pale fuzz underneath.
Pussy Willow is an important early-season food source for native bees and other pollinators. It is a host plant for numerous butterfly and moth caterpillars, including viceroy and mourning cloak butterflies. Its twigs and leaves are browsed by deer and other mammals, while its branches provide nesting habitat and cover for birds.
