Species details:
Red-osier dogwood is a large, multi-stemmed shrub, typically reaching 7-9 feet but can grow up to 10 feet in rich, moist soils. Red-osier dogwood brings year-round beauty, starting with clusters of white flowers in early spring, followed by pale blue berries in late summer that provide essential food for wildlife through fall and winter. The shrub’s reddish-purple fall foliage and vibrant red stems add striking color as the season progresses, standing out beautifully against winter snow.
Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers moist, fertile soils but tolerates a range of conditions, including swampy areas. Prune back 20-25% of the oldest stems each spring, or cut all stems to about 8 inches every few years for the best stem color.
Sun Exposure: Full, Partial
Soil Moisture: Wet to Medium
Height: up to 10 feet
Bloom Time: June to September
