Wild Garlic
Wild Garlic
Allium canadense
Wild Garlic is a hardy perennial that thrives in a variety of soil conditions, preferring sun but tolerating shade. Its grass-like leaves emerge early, followed by dome-shaped clusters of white to pink flowers in late spring and early summer. Before blooming, the plant produces top-set bulbils, its primary means of reproduction.
Crushing the foliage releases a strong onion scent, deterring rabbits and deer. The edible bulbs have a traditional onion flavor and were historically used in herbal remedies. This plant attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and native bees, though honeybees tend to avoid it.
