Lupinus perennis subsp. perennis
A showy plant that produces blueish purple flowers. Lupine is a member of the pea family and will fix nitrogen in the soil. It thrives in dry, well-drained and even nutrient-poor soil. It will not survive in wet or heavy clay soils!
When ripe, the seed pops explode open with a popping sound. Host plant for the endangered Karner Blue butterfly caterpillars. Birds and small mammals will eat the seeds.
