Sprig Native Plant Nursery
Wild Stonecrop
Wild Stonecrop
Sedum ternatum
A charming native groundcover prized for its delicate texture and reliable performance in shaded landscapes. Unlike many stonecrops, this species thrives in partial to full shade, making it an excellent solution for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and underplanting beneath trees.
In spring, Sedum ternatum produces clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers that brighten shady areas and attract early pollinators. Its soft green, whorled foliage forms a low, spreading mat that helps suppress weeds while adding a natural, layered look to the landscape.
Hardy, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant once established, Wild Stonecrop adapts well to a range of soil types, including rocky or sandy soils, as long as drainage is good.
The stems of this Sedum are naturally delicate and may snap during normal handling of pots or plugs. This is completely harmless to the plant and does not affect its overall health. In fact, the broken pieces can be used to propagate new plants. To do so, place a stem segment directly on exposed soil where you would like it to grow and press it lightly to ensure contact with the soil. There is no need to bury the stem, as it will root on its own.
