Species details:
Common Witch Hazel is a large, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with an open, spreading form. Its oval, dark green leaves turn yellow in fall, often alongside its unusual, fragrant yellow flowers that bloom from October into November, extending the flowering season well into autumn and providing a valuable late-season nectar and pollen source for bees, flies, beetles, and moths. It serves as a host plant for the larvae of the spring azure butterfly and witch hazel dagger moth. Its seeds provide food for birds and small mammals, while its branching structure offers cover and nesting habitat for birds.
